Transforming as a Writer

At least I’m trying to…

I started writing again this year after four years of writers block. Where I am now writing my first magical realism novel, that is actually being told in 2nd person. That is a surprise to me because I’m usually a contemporary fiction writer with a subplot of romance. But lately I’ve been in my magical realism bag and I am surprisingly enjoying writing this story in 2nd person.

Before the magical realism, I ended up writing a three book celebrity romance series that consists of an author/actor duo, singer/bodyguard duo, and a photographer/cowboy. Initially, I didn’t intend for it to turn into a series. I was just happy that I was able to write again. Happy that a new idea came to me strong enough to inspire me to write.

I went back old school and how I first started writing. The good old composition notebooks. The first story turned into a 611 page handwritten slow burn novel. I wanted it to be slow. It was so slow they didn’t meet each other until about page 230. I enjoyed being in their lives together. Book 2 came back accident. Like I said before this wasn’t intended to be a series. But as I got towards the end of book 1, I’d wondered about a singer and a bodyguard and that’s how it happened.

I was a bit afraid to write about a bodyguard because I’d never done it before. He turned out to be my favorite character to write out of the series. When book 3 came, I made a decision to make it a series, but I didn’t know how many books I would ultimately write in this series.

Book 3 came as I was scrolling on YouTube. I knew I wanted a photographer, but I didn’t know who her beau would be. So I was scrolling on YouTube and I came across this group of white women dancing to the popular Boots On the Ground song. They were dancing together, all out of rhythm, hitting the dance too hard; throwing the fans out of sync with each other. Instantly I had the idea to make her beau a cowboy.

See I’ve wanted to write a cowboy romance for about a year before I actually wrote one. I loved the cowboy romances I’d read back in 2025. But I was too afraid to write one because I didn’t know much about being a cowboy. So, I did my research and watched YouTube videos on what’s it really like to be a ranch hand. Then Book 3 was created and finished.

As a writer. I want to try to write things I’ve never written before. I started with the celebrity romances, now I’m writing this magical realism that I started back in November 2025, but ended up leaving it behind for about 8 months before I started back writing it. I also started a fantasy novel back in November 2025 that I left behind as well. I don’t know what genre I will try next, but I do want to try more than my usual genre. So I could keep my creative juices flowing. Writer’s block is no joke and mines lasted 4 years.
